Artmas 2014 – Danbo the Robot

Hello hello readers!! If you didn’t already know, I have been participating in Blogmas 2014 on my personal blog. What is Blogmas? Basically, bloggers post daily during the month of December or up until December 25th. If you haven’t already, please go check out my personal blog and subscribe for posts unrelated to art: https://laurenmichelepoetry.wordpress.com/

I did not want my art blog subscribers to be left out of Blogmas so I will be doing “Artmas” for the ten days leading up to December 25th. I will be spotlighting art related to Christmas and/or winter. Tonight I am spotlighting the character Danbo created by Kiyohiko Azuma. Danbo originated in the manga “Yotsuba&!”; he is a human wearing cardboard who comes to life only when coins are put into a designated slot. The Japanese branch of Amazon.com happened upon the character and thought he would be great for advertising. Danbo’s success caught the attention of artists all over the world and inspired them to create their own Danbo creations (Falcon). The second photograph is property of Arielle Nadel, the official photographer for Revoltech Danboard. Revoltech is a line of toys, and “Danboard” is “Danbo (“Arielle Nadel”).” The third photograph was taken by Hungarian artist Kisworos. I found her photograph by typing the term “Danbo Christmas” into the Flickr search engine. There were many cute images, but her scenario stood out to me as more than cute. I felt genuine emotion from the character despite the fact that he is a cardboard robot. The character’s facial expression plus the lighting makes me feel as though I am a child again sleeping on the couch so that I can stare at the family Christmas tree all night. I hope all of you enjoy this image as much as I do. Here is the link to the results from my Flickr search: https://www.flickr.com/search/?q=Danbo+Christmas The fourth photograph is by Pearl-Lucia Sayer. I found it by typing “Danbo Christmas” into the Google search engine. I like the scenario, but my favorite part is the style because it matches the classic “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” movie and instigates nostalgia.
